Meet Jedi's Crew
Family of Five sailing the Pacific Ocean
Like many millennials, Bryan and Alicia followed the traditional path: college, careers, homeownership. But life had other plans. A devastating house fire in 2016, followed by Bryan's father's cancer diagnosis, shattered their sense of security and challenged the definition of success. Despite Alicia's Doctorate of Education and Bryan's stable job, a nagging feeling of unfulfillment persisted. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 served as a final wake-up call. Life was fleeting, and they craved experiences over possessions.
Fueled by a desire for adventure and a meaningful life for their family, they charted a new course. They shed the weight of societal expectations, sold their house, and embraced a life less ordinary – full-time cruising. Since May 2021, they've called Jedi, their sailboat, home, transforming it into a platform for travel, connection, and sustainable living. Their journey began in the San Francisco Bay and set sail for Mexico in October 2023.
Meet SV Jedi
1985 Beneteau First 435 designed by the renowned naval architect Germán Frers
The Beneteau First 435 sailboat caters to sailors who crave both performance and livability. Designed by the renowned Germán Frers, it boasts sleek lines and a powerful sail plan, allowing it to excel in racing conditions. Yet, it doesn't compromise on comfort for offshore cruising. With a sturdy build, easy maneuverability, and well-appointed living quarters below deck, the First 435 promises a safe and enjoyable experience for both seasoned sailors and their families.
At 45 feet, Jedi, a masthead sloop, cuts an impressive figure. Her deep-draft fin keel (nearly 8 feet!) provides exceptional stability in waves and wind, though it might limit access to shallow harbors. Wide decks enhance safety and maneuverability on the open water.
Our boat hunt was fueled by a thirst for adventure. We craved a vessel that could devour miles on long passages, handle the might of an ocean crossing, and do it all with a touch of exhilaration. Jedi, with her sleek lines and spirited performance, ticked every box. Since setting sail, she's proven to be not only a swift passage maker but also a comfortable haven, offering ample space for our five-person crew. She tackles rough seas with grace and whisks us towards new horizons with eagerness.
We bypassed the "starter boat" route and set our sights on Jedi as our long-term companion. A Beneteau First 435, she's purpose-built for safe and swift ocean crossings – a key factor in our decision. Jedi's impressive pedigree sealed the deal. Since her 1985 Alaskan delivery, she's cruised the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico and tackled multiple Hawaiian adventures. Her proven track record and robust build inspire complete confidence.
